Joyn is a German streaming service from the merging of ProSieben, Maxidome and 7TV. We helped them create their product vision of a more immersive viewing experience, shaping their branding and designing their product. Seeing the app rank above Netflix and Prime in the German App Store was a great achievement.
When we first began designing, there wasn't even a name for the brand. This blank slate let us truly put product at the heart of the brand. Keeping Joyn branding black and white, the palette comes from the content artwork. Extra effort to use show logos, artwork and colour creates a more immersive and changing UI.
One of Joyn's biggest requirements was to try and limit endless scrolling through the same content. It was crucial that recommended content was promoted, but that you could also easily break out of your bubble and discover new content. Through the interaction model, features like 'moods', variations in content card designs and touches like pulling in synopsis at the rail level, we attempted to create this.
The product model tries to limit endless scrolling through the same content by staggering discovery, while keeping number of clicks to a minimum. The menu landing view shows 3-5 of the most contextual suggestions we think you would like. 1 click up for search and quick links, 1 down let’s you explore more content, with tabs to pivot down feeds.
One click up lands on ‘Moods’. Moods lets you break out of your recommendation bubble with currated collections that go beyond standard genres, to uncover more diverse content.
Live TV is left behind with the ease of on-demand content, but we wanted to update it. Highlights of what's on are recommended too, with easy access to catch-up. The old clunky EPG was also reimagined, to a more immersive design ideal for minimal channels.
